6th FullDome Festival

JENA/Germany, 07.05.2012.
Films, computer animations and programs for dome projection will be presented at the sixth international FullDome Festival in the Zeiss Planetarium in Jena from 8 to 12 May 2012. Support of the event provided by Carl Zeiss includes sponsorship of the awards for the three best student productions. The awards carry a cash prize of €500 each.

The projects submitted for the festival can be experienced in the Jena planetarium dome exclusively, where the conditions for fulldome – 360 degree projection with spatial sound – are provided to excellent quality standards. The FullDome Festival offers participants a platform for current productions in fulldome format. It also allows for new directions to be tested in the artistic, scientific and receptive adaptation of this medium which is still in its infancy. In total, 87 professional shows, short films and student projects produced by participants from eleven countries will be shown during the festival.

For the fifth time, Carl Zeiss is donating the Creative Award for the best idea, the Performance Award for the best composition and the Audience Award which will be allocated by the audience during the festival gala on Saturday night. The Creative and Performance Award winners have been selected in the run-up to the festival by an independent jury of seven members including media representatives, fulldome producers and planetarium experts. The winners will be announced and the awards presented at the public festival gala.

Carl Zeiss develops, builds and supplies the technology for fulldome projections. A VELVET full-dome projection system from Carl Zeiss has been in use in the Zeiss Planetarium in Jena since November 2011. The system's projectors ensure brilliant image rendition. Combined with the new 3D sound system of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology, Ilmenau, Germany, this system enables very special audio-visual experiences — not only during the festival, but all year round.
