Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Conjunctivitis or "pink eye" is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent layer of tissue that covers the surface of the inner eyelid and a portion of the front of the eye.

Cause
Most commonly, a bacterial infection. Highly contagious; can be passed on via towels, washcloths or bed linen.

Symptoms
Inflamed inner lids, blurred vision, an itchy feeling in the eyes and maybe a sensitivity to bright light; may be accompanied by a yellowish discharge or watery eyes.

Treatment
Usually clears in about a week; medication can be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms. When light sensitivity is involved, the child may need to wear sunglasses outdoors while recovering.
